Teacher hiring is highly structured and credential-first. A typical public-school district sees 80-200 applications per opening — fewer than private-sector roles, but the screening is rigorous: state teaching license verification, subject endorsement match, criminal background check, and reference calls with current administrators. The hiring committee usually includes the principal, a department head, and one parent or community member, and they grade on three dimensions: licensure + endorsements (do you have the right credentials for the role), classroom experience (subject + grade + school context), and measurable student outcomes (test-score growth, completion rates, behavior data).

The gap most teacher resumes fall into: they describe duties in generic education language ('developed lesson plans,' 'managed classroom behavior,' 'collaborated with colleagues') without naming the subject, the grade-level, the school context, or any student-outcome metric. Duty descriptions blend together; specific context and outcomes differentiate. A bullet that names the grade (8th grade Algebra I), the cohort size (134 students across 5 sections), and a student outcome (state-test pass rate rose from 62% to 81% over two years) gets read. A bullet that says 'taught math classes and supported student learning' does not.

The resumes that get pulled forward do three things differently. First, they put state license + endorsements + grade-band experience near the top — the credential filter the principal uses before reading anything else. Second, they describe each teaching role by subject, grade, cohort size, and student outcome — not by lesson-plan duties. Third, they surface curriculum work, technology integration, and any leadership or committee role beyond the classroom.

At the new-graduate level — typically within 18 months of licensure — the resume leads with student-teaching placements, methods classes, and any subject-specific honours. At the experienced level, the focus widens to subject mastery, curriculum development, mentor-teacher work, and named programs the candidate has led.

How to write a teacher resume

  1. 1

    Lead with license + endorsements + grade-band experience

    Hiring committees triage on credentials first. The first thing they look for is whether you're licensed in the state, with the right subject endorsement, for the right grade band. If you're a high-school math teacher with Texas certification and 5 years on the job, that information belongs in the first line.

    The pattern: 'High-school math teacher with [N] years experience. Texas Standard Teaching Certificate — Mathematics 7-12 + ELA 7-12. Currently at [School District] teaching [specific classes] to [N] students across [N] sections.'

    For new-graduate teachers: 'Newly-licensed elementary teacher; Texas Generalist EC-6 certification (Aug 2024). Student-taught 4th grade ELA + math at [school]; capstone project on data-driven differentiation.'

    Avoid leading with passion language. 'Passionate educator dedicated to fostering student growth' is what every teacher resume opens with — and what hiring committees skip. The summary leads with the credential + the grade-band experience.

    Quantify with student outcomes, not lesson-plan counts

    Most teacher resumes describe activities (planned units, designed lessons, managed behavior). The differentiator is naming the student-outcome metric. 'Pass rate on the Algebra I STAAR rose from 62% to 81% over two years across my 5 sections (134 students)' is what gets read. 'Developed engaging math lessons' is not.

    The outcomes that matter: • State / standardised test pass rates (and the specific test by name). • AP exam pass rates (3+ rate, 4+ rate, 5 rate — name which). • Reading-level growth (Lexile points, DRA levels, F&P benchmarks). • Specific cohort metrics: % proficient, % advanced, growth percentile. • Graduation rates, college-going rates, AP enrollment for your cohort. • Behavior metrics where they exist (referrals per quarter, on-task data).

    If you don't have access to the test data, name the cohort size + the curriculum + the year — gives the committee enough to grade scope.

  3. 3

    Name the curriculum, the LMS, and the assessment system

    Most teacher resumes vaguely reference 'curriculum design' or 'technology integration.' Specific names are the differentiator. Eureka Math + Google Classroom + STAR Reading + iReady is a parseable specification a hiring committee can match against the school's existing stack.

    The pattern: name what you've used for at least a full school year. Don't list every program you've heard of.

    Examples: • Taught Eureka Math (Algebra I) to 134 students across 5 sections in 2023-24; pass rate on the Algebra I STAAR rose 19 points year-over-year. • Built a district-recommended Google Classroom workflow for grading + parent communication; adopted by 14 other teachers in the building. • Used iReady (math) + STAR Reading assessments for quarterly progress monitoring; data informed differentiation for ~30 students receiving Tier 2 intervention.

  4. 4

    Surface curriculum work + committee + mentorship — when real

    Experienced teachers often have significant work beyond the classroom — curriculum committee membership, AP / IB coordinator roles, mentor-teacher work with student teachers, PLC leadership, department-head duties. Surface these prominently because they signal the senior teacher role hiring committees value most.

    Examples: • Mentor teacher for 2 student-teachers from UT Austin's MEd program (2022 + 2024 cohorts); both passed their student-teaching evaluations with 'Exceeds Expectations.' • PLC team lead for the 6th-grade math team (4 teachers); designed and ran the FY24 common-formative-assessment cycle. • AP Calculus AB course lead at our high school for two cohorts; AP Exam 4+ rate rose from 38% to 54% in year two. • Curriculum committee member for the FY23 ELA adoption; co-authored the rubric used to evaluate three candidate programs.

    Don't fabricate or pad. Hiring committees check references and ask follow-up questions in interview.

    Close with PD, certifications, and any subject-specific specialty

    The bottom third of a teacher resume is for credentials, professional development, and specialty. Content that earns this space: • Additional state-licensure endorsements beyond the primary subject (Gifted, ESL, Special Education, Reading Specialist). • National Board Certification (NBPTS) — if you have it, surface prominently. It's the recognised teacher credential. • AP Summer Institute attendance (and which AP subject + year). • Graduate degree progress (MEd in progress, EdD program, etc.). • Specialised methodology training: Orton-Gillingham (for reading specialists), AVID, IB Diploma certification, Reggio / Montessori training. • Professional memberships: NCTM, NCTE, NAEYC, CEC.

    Don't list weekly PD or required district training — only credentials and continuing learning that signal specialty depth.

Pro tip

Always include the cohort size

A test-score improvement on 12 students reads very differently from one on 134. Hiring committees grade scale and effect together. '134 students across 5 sections' is the specificity that pulls a resume forward.

Pro tip

Name the AP-rate specifically

AP teachers should name the specific rate: 3+ rate, 4+ rate, or 5 rate. '4+ rate rose from 38% to 54%' is what AP coordinators read. Generic 'high AP exam pass rate' is filler — every AP teacher claims it.

Pro tip

Don't pad PD with weekly trainings

District-required workshops, hour-long online PDs, and weekly faculty meetings should not appear on a resume. List only the PD that signals specialty depth — AP Summer Institutes, NBPTS components, week-long methodology trainings (Orton-Gillingham, AVID summer).

Pro tip

If you're applying out-of-state, name the reciprocity

'Currently Texas-certified; pursuing California reciprocity via the existing 5-year CTC pathway' tells a California principal you've already done the homework on the next step. Out-of-state candidates without this signal read as risky hires.

ATS notes

Teacher applications mostly go through district-specific ATS systems (Frontline / Applitrack, TalentEd, Educator Hire) and state-level systems for certification verification. Charter schools and private schools more often use Workday or Greenhouse. All four parsers handle education keywords cleanly — subject names, certification acronyms, grade-band terminology.

What this means concretely:

First, name your teaching license precisely. 'Texas — Standard Teaching Certificate (Mathematics 7-12, English Language Arts 7-12), license #TX1142876, expires 2027' is the strongest form. Out-of-state candidates should list the reciprocity status. National Board Certification (NBPTS) should be prominently named if you have it.

Second, name subject endorsements explicitly. 'Mathematics 7-12,' 'English Language Arts 4-8,' 'Special Education K-12,' 'ESL / ELL,' 'Gifted and Talented' — each is a parseable token that committees search for.

Third, name your LMS and tech stack. Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, Seesaw, Nearpod, Pear Deck, IXL, Khan Academy Districts, NewsELA — each appears in JDs. Specify which ones you've used at scale (district-wide rollout vs single-classroom).

Fourth, name standardised assessments + curricula. Common Core standards, Texas TEKS, California CCSS, NGSS for science. Eureka Math, Wonders, HMH Into Reading, IB Diploma, AP curricula. Don't list every program; list the ones you've actually delivered.

Fifth, student-outcome metrics matter. Pass rates on state tests, AP exam pass rates (and the AP-specific 3+/4+/5 rates), graduation rates for your cohort, growth scores. Don't pad — name only the outcomes you can defend in an interview.

Sixth, listing every workshop you've ever attended reads as padding. List PD that signals genuine specialty depth (curriculum-design certificates, AP Summer Institutes, NBPTS components, district-specific institute graduations).

Each follows the [verb] [object] [number] structure hiring managers grade against. Copy them as a starting point, swap in your own numbers, and read the annotation to understand why each one works.
